Snake Oil Collage

Wow!! This year has flown by!!  This is my last review to put up for the Schoolhouse Review Crew!!  Our family has been very blessed by this amazing group of ladies and incredible vendors during these last two year!  And I cannot think of a better way to wind this up than to post a review for our absolute FAVORITE product of the year AND our new FAVORITE game in our vast collection!  I just knew from watching the video that Out of the Box Games had a serious hit on their hands with Snake Oil.  So I pretty much begged, borrowed and pleaded to make sure this one arrived at our house!

This is a game for anywhere from 3-10 players, approximately ages 10 and up.  Retailing for $19.99, this is one of the best deals out there on the market. It is quick and easy to learn (took about 5 minutes to figure it all out) and a snap to get set up.

This super fun game consists of two different sets of cards….the Customer Cards and the Word Cards.  The Customer Cards each have a description of a customer, using one word only…such as Castaway, Nurse, Santa, or Alien.  The Word Cards are also one word descriptions of just about anything you can think of…such as dog, whistle, soap or vest.

Each player draws a Customer Card, which has two sides…so the player is able to select which type of customer he or she shall be.  Will I be a an Alien or a Taxi Driver for this round?  And then they are dealt six Word Cards, which are only one sided.

After everyone is situated with their cards, the person taking their turn to be the customer will announce which one he or she shall be for that round.  The rest of the players will then decide what product they would like to sell to the customer using two Word Cards from their hand.  They have the opportunity to make a short sales pitch, demonstrating why the Customer would benefit from their product above the others.

We had the BEST time with this game! My mother-in-law happened to be coming for a visit right after our game arrived, so we waited to break it in with her!

We took turns around the table being the customer, and we had such fun!  Among other things, we sold:

  • A “greed pump” to a Dictator, so that when he wished for something, he could pump the “greed pump” and it would come…perfect for a greedy Dictator!
  • A “joke pool” to a Geek, so that he could sit in it and laugh a lot!
  • A “story basket” to a Politician, so that he could have endless stories to tell on the campaign trail!
  • "A “ticket oven” to a Secret Admirer, so that he could wish for a ticket for something to give to the object of his affection, and he would have it!
  • “Revenge gum” to an Executioner, which would do all the dirty work for him!
  • “Cheese vest” for an Alien, who could wear the vest, and then the people would come to the cheese vest so he could capture and study them!

There were times I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt, and I almost had tears!  I learned that my 10 year old daughter is one of the best salespeople in the family!

Each round takes about 10-15 minutes, and we played for at least an hour and a half.  If we hadn’t been so hungry for lunch, we probably wouldn’t have even quit then!

For a little taste of what this is all about, take a peek at this video!

And then? Well, you’re pretty much going to have to order!
